From 7 to 13 July 2025, Żgħażagħ Azzjoni Kattolika (ŻAK) Imġarr hosted a youth group from Azione Cattolica Casale Monferrato, Italy, for a week-long exchange entitled “Sodi fit-Tama – Solidi nella SperanzaFirm in Hope”. Following the theme of Pope Francis’ Jubilee of Hope, the programme offered participants a meaningful experience exploring the many dimensions of hope through creativity, reflection, community engagement and shared faith. This exchange was financed through Erasmus+.

The exchange opened with a creative session inviting participants to reflect on their personal understanding of hope. Through art and group discussion, the young people shared powerful symbols and ideas, laying the foundation for a deeper exploration of the theme. A workshop on Pope Francis’ call for a Jubilee of Hope prompted thoughtful dialogue, followed by a bilingual Mass to honour the international presence.

Hope in the face of challenges was another key theme. Through a series of dynamic and interactive activities; including a blindfolded obstacle course and a one-minute skit challenge in various performance styles, participants explored how hope can emerge both in the outcome and in the process. Cultural immersion continued with traditional pastizzi and a live-action Cluedo game in the historic city of Mdina.

As the week progressed, the group reflected on the anchor as a symbol of hope; asking what keeps them grounded in uncertain times. Using tools like Mentimeter, participants were able to express themselves honestly and safely, identifying sources of strength such as faith, family, friendships and passions. That evening, a peaceful sunset boat trip closed with a moment of quiet reflection.

One of the most moving experiences was when each participant planted a small seedling in a biodegradable pot and gifted it to elderly residents from the Mġarr community; a gesture that symbolised planting hope in others. Later, the group visited ACT Malta, where environmentalist Claude delivered a powerful talk on Malta’s ecosystem and reminded the group that “hope without action is meaningless.”

Emma Buttigieg explained that this exchange was an incredible experience that she will never forget. She did not expect to make such great friends and create so many beautiful memories. During this exchange, she also felt that she grew both personally and spiritually, not only through the workshops but also during the informal time the group spent together. Maria Sammut also depicts this exchange as a truly beautiful experience. She learned how to socialise with people from different cultures and wishes that such opportunities continue to be offered to young people, because they are a chance for young people to keep learning and growing in their faith.

Sara Vella never expected to come away with the memories and lessons she now carries with her. It was an experience, during which she formed beautiful friendships while also reflecting on how she can be a source of hope for those around her – and truly, how important hope is in our lives. Andreas Muscat, a leader at ŻAK Imġarr explains that after a lot of preparation, commitment and dedication, he can say that this exchange was a success, enriched with HOPE. The group integrated very well together, and as time passed, both groups became more comfortable with one another through the workshops and the free time, which was full of games, singing, and laughter. He believes that during this exchange they lived out the three pillars of ŻAK: helping members grow personally, socially, and spiritually – and we kept a good balance between all three.

Federico, an Italian participant, explains that from the very first day he set foot in ŻAK House, the Maltese people were very welcoming and kind towards them. But it was only after getting to know them that he truly felt embraced as part of a big family. The moments they shared and the days they spent together will forever be the backdrop to what he can easily call one of his all-time favorite experiences in life. Luis, another Italian participant, describes the week in Malta as an incredible opportunity where he participated in a variety of workshops centered around the theme of hope. These moments were filled with powerful emotions, deep conversations, and meaningful connections. They sang together, danced with joy, and supported one another as they explored what hope truly means in their lives. He feels that he has grown a lot, not only emotionally, but also mentally and spiritually. This experience changed him for the better in every possible way, and he knows it will remain a part of him forever. He will always carry Malta and everything he lived in my heart.
