“Ġrew Flimkien” (running together) was a national intergenerational activity and national promotional campaign implemented by Azzjoni Kattolika Maltija (AKM), aimed at promoting meaningful interactions between different generations and encouraging active participation in volunteering. AKM is composed of members ranging from children, young people, adults and elderly, all of whom contribute to Maltese society and the voluntary sector. The project recognises intergenerational engagement as a powerful tool to strengthen social cohesion, reduce loneliness, and enhance mental and physical wellbeing.
The central theme of the campaign is inspired by Eugène Burnand’s painting “The Disciples Peter and John Running to the Sepulchre on the Morning of the Resurrection”, symbolising people of different ages and characteristics journeying together towards hope, renewal and community. The theme highlights that faith, volunteering and social engagement are lived experiences that flourish within a shared, supportive communities.
A national intergenerational event was held on Saturday 15th November 2025, bringing together approximately 170 people. The event included small-group intergenerational workshops focused on dialogue, shared experiences, and a collaborative activity, followed by a festive communal celebration including mass and food. These activities created spaces for participants from different age groups to connect, discuss, and play together, overcoming generational differences through shared purpose.
